Apple Updates The Mac Pro – But No New Processor Yet

Next to the relatively insignificant recent announcement (an external keyboard with Touch ID), there was a slightly larger announcement for the Apple world – a new model of the Mac Pro has just been released. According to the most recent reports, the most powerful Mac computer won't be getting a shiny new Apple Silicon processor until 2022. For this reason, Apple decided to update the Intel version of the Mac Pro one last time to tide things over. There were some rumors that Cupertino might equip the powerful desktop with some new Intel processors, breathing some fresh life into the product – unfortunately, that isn't the case. However, that's not to say that the new edition is without improvement, although it's restricted to the device's graphical capabilities.

New Graphics Card For The Mac Pro
This go around, Apple has focused more on the Mac Pro's graphical capabilities than raw computing power, choosing to upgrade the GPU in the new model rather than the CPU. Here are the configurations available:

In the base configuration with the various new graphics card options:

  • AMD Radeon Pro W6800X, 32 GB VRAM, US$8,399.00
  • AMD Radeon Pro W6800X Duo, 64 GB VRAM, US$11,199.00
  • AMD Radeon Pro W6900X, 32 GB VRAM, US$11,599.00
  • AMD Radeon Pro W6900X Duo, 64 GB VRAM, US$17,599.00

The graphics cards aren't only available as "build to order" options, but also individually – for those who own an older Mac Pro from 2019 or onwards and want to upgrade their device. Apple mentions 2 benchmark results in the product's description: The current model runs DaVinci Resolve 23% faster and Octane X 84% faster. A W6800X offers 16 teraflops of performance and a W6900 – 22.2 (single precision). Up to 6 4K displays, 3 5K displays, or 3 of Apple's Pro XDR displays are supported.

All Available Graphics Cards
Including the new Mac Pro configurations and new graphics cards, the following graphics cards for the Mac Pro are now available for purchase from Apple:

Graphics Card VRAM Price
Radeon Pro W5500X 8 GB US$600
Radeon Pro W5700X 16 GB US$1,000
Radeon Pro W6800X 32 GB US$2,800
Radeon Pro W6900X 32 GB US$6,000
Radeon Pro W6800X Duo 64 GB US$5,000

Other than that, there don't seem to have been any other changes to the product. However, this is likely to be the last update to the Intel variation of the Mac Pro – before the new Apple Silicon variant is released. Concerning the upcoming Apple Silicon iMac 27", there has still been no new news.
