Bloomberg: No Mac mini With M1 Pro – M2 & M2 Pro In Old Design Instead

Apple revealed the Mac mini with M1 in the winter of 2020 – and the device has found itself unchanged in the lineup since then. Many users have wished for an M1 Pro version of the Mac mini after the presentation of the new MacBook Pro models in the winter of 2021. Several sources even rumored as much, however, Apple has thus far yet to release such a variant of the Mac mini.

Bloomberg On The Matter
In his most recent weekly PowerOn Newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that Apple may have indeed been working on an M1 pro version of the Mac mini at one point – although the plans have reportedly since been abandoned. Instead, the company is now working on a new generation of the device with both M2 and M2 Pro chips.

No New Design
The upcoming generation of the Mac mini will see customers hoping for a new design somewhat disappointed, at least according to Bloomberg. The current design stems from the one developed 12 years ago for the third generation fo the Mac mini – meaning that the device's external housing has remained on the market nearly entirely unchanged (apart from the color).

Release Date Currently Unknown
It's still unknown when Apple might release the second generation of the Mac mini with M-chips. It's possible that Cupertino plans to present the new version as early as this fall – although this would indicate a market release in the spring of 2023. The M2 chip was revealed at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2022, with the chip making its first appearance in the MacBook Air 22 and MacBook Pro 13" 2022.
