Comparison: 5G Vs. LTE Battery Life For iPhone 13, iPhone SE 2022, & iPad Air 5

The first iPhone with connection to the 5G network was the iPhone 12 introduced at the end of 2020. From the start, the concern had always been how 5G would affect the device's battery life – as the chips needed to support it required more energy. According to test reports, the switch from LTE to 5G came with higher power consumption. In the test, the iPhone 12 with 5G ended up dying after 8 hours and 25 minutes, whereas the iPhone 10 LTE held out for 10 hours and 23 minutes. During the test, the devices were tasked with reloading a website every 30 seconds. Now, a comparison test from the Wall Street Journal hopes to reveal whether or not the situation has changed any since the newer generations.

Battery Life: 5G Vs. LTE
The Wall Street Journal chose a slightly different test scenario – this time, the devices streamed video content instead of loading up a website. The results show that the faster, 5G cellular standard does not come without a negative impact on battery life. How To Deactivate 5G
The results of the test point to 5G support decreasing battery life by around 20%. The difference in battery life is less drastic in daily usage, as unlike in the test, the device isn't constantly exchanging data via cellular. However, more intensive data usage will reveal the disparity in battery life between 5G and non-5G devices – this can be countered by simply switching the device to LTE, although this does come with slightly slower cellular performance.

1) Open Settings
2) Choose "Cellular"
3) Choose "Cellular Data Options"
4) Choose "Language & Data" and switch from 5G to LTE

On devices with dual-sim cards, things are slightly different. The option "Language & Data" isn't found under the main menu of "Cellular", rather in the primary or secondary data plan. Other than that, the process is entirely the same.
