Mac Studio – Be Careful When Buying, Stand Not Changeable

At this week's "Peek Performance" event, Apple released the new Studio Display alongside the Mac Studio. The 5K, 27" monitor is the ideal companion for the compact desktop computer and comes with a similar design. However, it isn't only the monitor's outward appearance that makes it a great companion – it's the fact that the Studio Display purchasable with the Mac mini comes with a fully tilt-adjustable stand. As far as the monitor's height, it's perfectly adapted to the size of the Mac Studio – which is rather easy to recognize in photos and videos of the products.

Studio Display & Stand
The Studio Display intended for the Mac Studio only comes in one size. That being said, Apple does offer two options for the stand that allow for an optimal adaptation of the stand to individual preference. Those hoping to attach the display to a VESA display mount will have to order the monitor with the appropriate VESA adaptor – at no additional cost. However, there's an added price for users who want a Studio Display with a tilt/height-adjustable stand with special balancing arms will have to shell out US$1,999 in addition to the price of the Mac Studio – US$1,599 in the case of an only tilt-adjustable stand.

All Decisions Are Final
Customers set on purchasing a Studio Display should be certain of exactly which variation they would like before making a full commitment. In a small footnote at the bottom of the page, Apple declares that all decisions made are final and that once users have submitted a purchase for one of the three display types, they can't change the display's stand at a later point in time. This rather important tip only appears in an information pop-up after a mouse click on the area above "Stand" – "Note: Each stand or mount adapter is built in. They are not interchangeable, so it’s important to consider your workspace needs at the time of purchase."

Stands Are Not Interchangeable After Display Purchase
The warning clarifies that those who purchase a tilt-adjustable stand are not able to swap that stand out for a tilt/height-adjustable stand on the same monitor at a later point in time. This limitation also applies to Studio Displays ordered with a VESA mount adaptor – it's equally impossible to attach a stand to only VESA versions of the monitor. Thus, those hoping to have the best of both world should purchase a Studio Display with a VESA mount adaptor and along with a third party monitor-holder. Although this does somewhat contradict Apple's design language and design intentions as far as the monitor is concerned, it won't lead to any major change in the display's usage and offers the customer greater flexibility and versatility with regards to the Studio Display's usage.
