New AirPods 3: Sales Increase Considerably Over Christmas

At the company's "Unleashed" event back in October 2021, Apple didn't reveal only the new MacBook Pro series equipped with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips – it also showed off the third generation of AirPods. In the meanwhile, fans of the popular earphones had already been waiting two and a half years for a new generation of the standard AirPods. Apple released the second generation of basic AirPods in March 2019 and the first generation was released in September 2016 alongside the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2.

The AirPods "3"
The third generation of Cupertino's popular AirPods come with quite a few new bells and whistles. For starters, they feature a new design, while also offering Spatial Audio, support for Dolby Atmos, and a longer battery life. Additionally, AirPods users no longer need to own a pair of AirPods Max headphones or AirPods Pro earphones for ambient noise-cancellation. The third generation of AirPods now supports the sound-dampening feature as well. The AirPods 3 are available for a flat US$179 in the Apple Online Store, the option for personalized engraving is included in the price at no extra charge.

High Sales Numbers During The Christmas Quarter
Well-known tech analyst and leaker Ming-Chi Kuo recently released a new report. According to the report, Apple witnessed a considerable increase in AirPods sales during the Christmas season. In total, during the fourth calendar quarter – Cupertino sold 90 million AirPods. 27 million of these sales came from customers purchasing a pair of third generation of AirPods. Sales figures would have been even higher, had the demand not exceeded supply in the fourth quarter. At the moment, delivery times are back to normal in the US, however, AirPods sales figures were still 20% more than in than last Christmas' sale quarter in 2020.

No New Standard Generation In 2022 – New AirPods Pro Model
There won't be a next generation for the basic AirPods model in 2022, however, the rumor mill foresees Apple releasing a new generation of the AirPods Pro this fall. The new Pro earphones would feature a new design and fully support lossless compression – the current Bluetooth solution for wireless audio does not fully support lossless sound quality due to a bandwidth bottle neck.
