Updates: iOS 14.4, And More

The test phase of iOS 14.4 and iPad OS 14.4 hasn't lasted very long. The beta began in the middle of December, with the first test build making its first appearance one month later, and one week after that – the release candidate. The same goes for tvOS 14.4, and watchOS 7.3. The updates will finally be ready for users of all supported devices this evening. The short amount of time between development and release means that we likely won't see any major changes with these updates, Apple would take wait much longer until release if that were the case. However, the assorted bug fixes and performance improvements that they bring with them are appreciated nonetheless. Below is a summary of what these various updates entail.

iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4
The 4th update to iOS/iPadOS 14 comes with a well-arranged list of improvements and a relatively short list of release notes, with Apple addressing the following:

  • Scanning of Small QR Codes Now Possible
  • Bluetooth: Device Type Now Configurable
  • Warning When A Device's Camera Is Replaced With A Third-Party Camera After Repair
  • BugFix: Image Errors With HDR Photos On iPhone 12 Removed
  • Handoff With Homepod mini Improved (feature-improvement from the beta, not listed in the official release notes)

macOS 11.2 (yet to be released)
While iOS 14 has already received 4 large updates, there have only been 2 updates to macOS Big Sur – although macOS 11 was released a few weeks after iOS 14. According to the release notes, the new update brings with it the following improvements:

  • Better Bluetooth Reliability
  • Apple Apps No Longer Bypass Firewall
  • BugFix: System Settings Were Sometimes Unlockable
  • BugFix: Edited ProRAW Photos Were Sometimes Unsavable
  • BugFix: External Displays Were Occasionally Black On The M1 Mac mini

watchOS 7.3 and tvOS14.4
Neither system has received any noticeable changes, only bug fixes, compatibility improvements, and security bug fixes. For "Black History Month", which Apple is starting to celebrate this month, the Apple Watch has received a new watch face and purchasable band.

Other Updates
Apple has also taken users of older hardware into consideration with some updates to the predecessors of current system software – primarily in the form of security updates.
