macOS Monterey 12.1 is Released

On October 25, Apple released macOS Monterey to all users, one week after the October event. The official release was preceded by a beta phase of more than four months - significantly more than iOS 15. The most important innovations included revised versions of Safari, Notes, Photos, Maps, and the new Shortcuts app. Apple also tweaked notifications, AirPlay and iCloud. With the release of version 12.1 today, Apple goes one step further and adds features that did not make it in time for the Monterey launch. The beta phase, which started on October 28, has thus come to an end. We summarize the most important points of the latest update

Some new features in macOS 12.1
From the update description, the following enhancements are available:
  • SharePlay for media sharing via FaceTime. Announced back at WWDC in June, it's only now bringing the feature to all users
  • "iCloud Private Relay" has become "Limit IP Address Tracking", but the task doesn't change - when browsing, the IP address is supposed to be disguised
  • Apple Voice Music Plan, $4.99 per month for pure Siri operation

  • If you want to take care of your digital legacy, such a feature will be available in Monterey from now on
  • A new feature for iCloud+: Hide your own mail address with a randomly generated, anonymous identifier. If you reply to it, iCloud takes care of the delivery and redirects the message accordingly.
  • Support for additional external graphics cards, although only Intel Macs can take advantage of this.
  • Photos app: Memories have been redesigned, additional animation and transition styles, as well as collages with multiple images
  • TV app: The "Store" tab allows browsing of movies and TV shows
  • Numerous other bug fixes
  • Unfortunately not included: Universal Control

Download and installation
As always, the new macOS update can be downloaded and installed via Software Update in System Preferences. The user automatically receives the appropriate system version, manual downloads for the respective hardware architecture are not necessary.

Security updates for older system versions
Those who have not yet switched to macOS 12 Monterey, but want to continue with Big Sur, will also receive an update: macOS 11.6.2 is available now. In the case of Catalina, it is a security update.
